Sanders: Game decision is up to Chargers

Posted @ 5:28 PM

Whether the Chargers host the Houston Texans this weekend at Qualcomm Stadium is up to them, Mayor Jerry Sanders said this afternoon.

"Should they decide to play in San Diego, the stadium will be ready on Sunday," said Fred Sainz, the mayor's spokesman. "It's their decision to play in San Diego or not."

The Chargers had no comment as of 5:20 p.m. but could have one later, spokesman Bill Johnston said.

Earlier today, Chargers officials were optimistic the game would be played in San Diego, perhaps on Monday night.

In Houston earlier today, Texans coach Gary Kubiak said today he didn't know anything for sure, "But the indications to us were that we were going to play on Monday night in San Diego. That's the last thing I've been told."

The Chargers had been deferring to Sanders until the mayor's statements
around 5 p.m.

A decision by the Chargers would bring to a close a week of uncertainty that saw the team leave Tuesday for Arizona with the idea they might remain on the road for a game.

Qualcomm Stadium has fewer than 400 evacuees remaining, and the stadium is going to be closed as a shelter tomorrow.

The league and Chargers had considered playing the game in Dallas had the mayor said Qalcomm was not an option.

The Chargers will practice for a third straight day tomorrow in Tempe, Ariz., and then plan on returning home.

WHO CARES?! Over 200,000 people are still out of their homes and uncertain as to if they evenhave homes anymore and we are giving air time to the Chargers. THE CHARGERS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR LEAVING TOWN AND NOT STICKING AROUND TO VOLUNTEER AND ASSIST FELLOW CITIZENS AND LOYAL FANS! LET THEM STAY OUT OF TOWN PERMANENTLY.

the thing is they have a job to do, and they couldn't just give up practicing to volunteer. i guarentee that members of the chargers will donate lots of money and lots of volunteer time with the rebuilding/recovery.

They are paid employee's, there were more then enough volunteers, they did not need any "stars" getting in the way of efforts. They had to practice, I am sure if given the chance they would have assisted. They were happy to move the game, stay out of the way and not create a distraction. This was up to the city not the Bolts if it gets played here.

What about Aguirre, he is hiding in Yuma AZ, but he IS a paid city employee.....

Go ahead and bash the Chargers...Only 50 people in the organization were evacuated like the rest of the us, they have a job to do...By them playing it allows all of us a chance to show that San Diego has survived and we will rebuild and we all will be stronger. For 3-4hrs let us smile again and feel some joy!

I CARE! I am an evacuee and would love to have my life get back to normal. And watching the Chargers on a Sunday afternoon would be just that. You and Aguirre should go hang out. HATERS!

dgilmore, you're a donkey. What's your great contribution to the fire victims and the community. The Chargers will and have done more for our community than the likes of you ever will. You seem to just relish the opportunity, no matter what the circumstance, to rip the Chargers. Many of those 200,000 would welcome the distraction of a Chargers game and a little normalcy to their lives. You don't strike me as a true San Diegan. I wish people like you would just go back to where you came from and not look back.

As for an earlier post... Everyone has a job to do. What because they are football players or other sports stars they get special treatment. They are just like you and I. We all put our pants on feet first just like them. They are not special

Agree; the Chargers are a great community asset and have done even more things for the area that go unnoticed and unpublicized. dgilmore obviously is clueless in not understanding that the coaches/players have jobs to do as well.

FYI - I have donated tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours to charity organizations. I brought two carloads of blankets and supplies to the County Animal Shelter on Gaines and the El Cajon Animal Shelter yesterday...

P.S. I was born in Vista, CA, and raised in Mira Mesa. At Mira Mesa High I was Vice-president of the Key Club, a service club. The many people that donated time and supplies to assist evacuees are the epitome of charity, community, and class. Leaving town on a private jet does not epitomize such traits.

To dgilmore could you please quit bragging how much you've donated and what you've done in the past. I would say honor the firemen and women during half time of Chargers game on Sunday at QUALCOMM

dgilmore must be a Raider Fan!!

I don't get it -- and I brought it up before --- in looking ahead-- why didn't they go to Petco? In fact, the evacuated could have watched the game at Petco. No one was displaced. They knew the Chargers had a future home game. And Petco has great facilities.
Either way - whether they play at the q or elsewhere - play on the moon for all I care. Just win this for the residents of San Diego and all affected.

Hey dgilmore-

Did you ever think about the positives a game being played in San Diego would bring! There are several thousand fans who would love to see the game played here! The Chargers did help raise funds 4-years ago when this happened and the game was moved to Arizona! They will be able to tell our story on national TV, show the devastation and help with the fundraising by letting the nation know how they can help...If you think the community doesn't need this, go watch the film of when the Saints played in the superdome, the place was sold out! The community got to show how the devastation was still there a year later! Quit whinning because you got picked last when it came time to pick teams, so you ran off and joined the key club!

dgilmore, I am a Charger fan, and I must admit, I agree with you 100% There is a time where you put aside "business as usual" and you help your community. The Chargers, the organization, and the NFL should be ashamed of themselves. Yeah, it would be nice to have a game on Sunday or Monday, but a great percentage of our communty are either displaced or homeless. Let's worry about that first, before a football game.

To last anonymous:

That's what I'm saying... the condition of our residents should come first and foremost.

To earlier anonymous:

Yeah, why not have the evacs at the game so they don't have to be displaced?

To earlier anonymous:

Even if only 50 people in the organization were evacuated, why take the private jet to AZ when 99% of everyone else went to a shelter? There are plenty of hotels in SD they could've gone to.

Anonymous said...

That is right ... there is plenty of room in hotels for the people still at Qualcomm.

Anonymous said...

If you are so worried about the victims and you have donated so many thousands of dollars, I guess you can afford to put up a few people sleeping at Qualcomm up for a few nights at a Holiday Inn?

dgilmore needs to get a life.

If you truly donated anything in your life, you would do so and never speak of it or look for attaboy's

Sad, Sad, Sad..... When you can walk on water....Start Judging others then.

I was at work through the whole ordeal. Chargers didn't get outta work either.. neither did the firemen and many others had to work also. Have you ever heard of resposibilities. The city would be much happier with a win this Sunday. And much much happier if you got the hell outta town. If Your job requires fresh oxygen then you need to get it @ the nearest location donk. Your a joke. Were all wrong.... your the only one right

dgilmore said...

In reply:

Not looking for any "attaboys" but was responding to previous comments.

Also, did host several people at our hotel free of charge until they were able to return to their homes.

"JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD"

Oh, and maybe all of your fervor over a football game should be directed to a more positive and productive civic cause...
