PBS is mapping the fire and evacuation areas in google maps:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=114250687465160386813.00043d08ac31fe3357571&ll=32.872667,-117.04834&spn=1.183359,2.070923&z=9&om=0

You can download this information into Google Earth:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=114250687465160386813.00043d08ac31fe3357571&output=nl

It will download a file that you can open in Google Earth. You can then survey the current status in a virtual environment.

Everything Google does is right.

I'm in Mission Trails...lucky so far. My sympathies to those who haven't been so lucky...

Links posted funny...start dragging from the blank line below the URL up instead of from the "http" down.

careful of that map... it shows that I-5 is closed and incorrectly refers to it as I-15 and that's not closed anymore... keep praying all, this wind is unreal.

compared to Ceder fire 2003 only 50,000 were evacuated....this is crazy

Yeah, but fifteen people died in 2003, most of them civilians.

I think the early, massive evacuations will end up saving a lot of lives - though it's easy for me to say, sitting comfy at home instead of at the Q or a high school gym somewhere...
