Chula Vista evacuations

Posted @ 10:06 PM

Chula Vista remains on alert after issuing an evacuation order for the Bella Lago community.

The city also has issued non-mandatory evacuation advisories for the Woods at EastLake, some areas of San Miguel Ranch and some areas of Rolling Hills Ranch.

About 150 evacuees are taking shelter at the Community Youth Center gymnasium on the Chula Vista High School campus, 465 L Street. Many people have been dropping off food, but there's a continuing need for sleeping bags and mats.

The Sweetwater Union High School District will provide evacuees with breakfast Tuesday morning and the Chula Vista Elementary School District will provide lunch.

Chula Vista residents who want updates on the fire situation can call (619) 397-6399 to hear recorded messages.

Does anyone know why Harbison Canyon and Crest have mandatory Evacuations? I haven't seen reports of fires anywhere near them. I am only a few miles east of Crest in Granite Hills and am worried but and I haven't seen any information on this.

How about you guys buy a server that doesn't run on vacuum tubes? Seriously, you have a duty to keep us informed and you apparently want to keep dumping money into printing presses instead of paying enough for a sufficient IT staff.

Inexcusable.

It's been TWO HOURS... where's the news? :( I want to hear more about the Del Mar and La Jolla areas! I am a student at UCSD and need to know whether or not to leave like my roommate did...

whoo! alright! said...

i'm a ucsd student too, silver. no reason to be worried right now but i would wake up every couple hours and check the news just in case.

And now all television news channels are off.

Woo! Time to tune in to KPBS and hope that they get us SOME information.

Oh, I'm not freaking out like all my suitemates are... they're convinced the fires are at Scripps Hospital... and I had to convince them that it's Scripps RANCH, not Hospital... and apparently they thought the Fairgrounds were being evacuated, too.

Anyway... I'm just worried because I don't know where I'd go... I would want a ride home to Oceanside, but if the fire crosses over the I-5... I'll have to go wherever I can, I guess.

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed that the updates stopped at 10om here. The SD County Emergency webpage stopped at 8:30pm. Thank goodness for KPBS, who is posting constant Twitters.

Also, Devin. My friend drove around scouting and made me a map. He saw fires in Crest.

Does anyone know the status of the La Jolla area? I'm not sure how to guage this. One minute the news is telling people to leave, the next they are telling you to stay home and keep the roadways clear. It this true Del Mar has been evacuated? If so, that is 4 miles north of me in La Jolla.

I haven't heard anything about La Jolla -- I am listening to KPBS radio on FM 89.5. I am watching the news on channel 10 - doesn't look like they're posting anything useful.

I would also like to hear something about La Jolla -- I work there and would like to hear some status.

Try that.

P.S. Del Mar residents are suggested to evacuate, but it appears that only eastern Del Mar is required to evacuate.

La Jolla is still outside of the evacuation area, as is everything else south of the 56 and west of I-15.

Some people in Mira Mesa received reverse 911 calls, but those were discovered to be in error.

I hope it doesn't come this way, but it sure is close...too close for comfort. I'm not used to being in disaster mode.

I went up to the top of Mount Helix in El Cajon at dusk and could see 3 fires, the huge Witch fire to the north, the Huge Harris fire to the south and a much smaller fire due East. It was hard to tell just how far the fire was to the east, I assumed it was the Descanso fire, but there are tall mountains between there and El Cajon and I could clearly see a hillside burning. Perhaps this was the fire near Crest that Michelle was talking about. Unbelievable that it hasn't even been mentioned in any news outlet. I'm just a few miles West (downwind but also downhill) from Crest so I'm a little worried.

I tried to sign up for reverse 911, Devin but the site only lets you do it in the city of San Diego...

Your best bet is probably to assign the KPBS Twitters to come to your phone so if you're asleep you'll still get notices on your cell. That's what I'm doing.

As for La Jolla, it is safe. My work is there and they asked us not to come in today or tomorrow (Tuesday) due to poor air quality.

Celeste, you may want to consider leaving just to stay away from teh smokey air. It made me nauseous when were outside earlier today.

The maps shown on uniontrib.com, cbs8.com, and live on KGTV are worthlessly out of date. All the graphics people must've gone home at 5PM. KPBS has the most current map.

Yesterday on the news we were told that one of the fires had entered northern el cajon, and that was the last it was mentioned. does any one know if they had managed to put it out or contain it?

The news needs to cover all areas not just the areas with nicer homes like scripps ranch, del mar, torrey pines, etc.

There are other areas that still need to be informed.
