Two of the three tracts that make up the Santa Ysabel Indian Reservation near Lake Henshaw burned in the Witch Creek fire, but firefighters were able to save all the homes, tribal chairman Johnny Hernandez said Thursday.
Flames spared the largest tract, on the flank of Volcan Mountain, which houses tribal offices, most of the homes, and the tribe's brand-new casino.
Hernandez said power and communication lines have been down since Sunday, when the Witch Creek fire began, and most of the reservation's 280 residents have evacuated, some as far as Arizona and Los Angeles.
Initially, some went to Borrego Springs, but supplies ran out at an evacuation center there.
"Some of our members came back, we sent them up to Soboba," a Riverside county Indian reservation where evacuees were housed in a gymnasium.
It's unclear when electricity and other services will be restored to the reservation, he said.

I'm really happy that our Firefighters know what they are doing!
GO FIRE FIGHTERS!!! you are seriously amazing! I hope when you get home you have homes left. And I hope that the people here don't forget how amazing you all are. Thank you to all the fire fighters that have come from all over! seriously you are all my heros
The Borrego evac site ran out of supplies? How can that happen when Qualcomm is turning supplies away??
I keep hearing about Santa Isabella but nothing about the businesses. Has anyone heard about Dudley's Bakery? I'm concerned because the owners stayed in 2003 to feed the fire fighters & protect the bakery.
kate -- probably there have been road closures etc. as the Witch Creek fire burned over a lot of the back roads one would use to get to Borrego.

Thank God, I am so glad the reservation was saved! My heart goes out to all the people who have lost their homes, businesses, and personal possessions. The whole nation is praying for you guys, may God bless.
I hope all the Fire Fighters and Police officers are being safe. I'm sure glad the reservation was saved.
It is a terrible fire
Glad the winds have died down and the firefighters have the opportunity to work on putting out the fires.
its so sad what happened in california with the wildfires i really hope they can rebuild everything and give all the people their homes back
god bless victims from the fire
I'd like to requote a comment left on my blog regarding this issue...
"One of my favorite comedians, George Carlin, recently said that the world is fine, its us people that have a problem. What are we doing to this planet? Why are we allowing corporations to ruin our environment because they are required by law to put maximum profit above evrything, including people and our future. Do I feel sorry for the rich people in Califormia who built houses on the side of a mountain and have now lost them to fire? Absolutuely not. It is a mountain, leave it as such. I am also disgusted that they have received such quick help from Bush. The new Orleans flood affected poor black people. It is still a disaster area! Bush turned his back on them, purposely. Corporations are turning their back on the future. We, as humans have also turned our back on the future. I hope we can make a difference, and everybody can change ways, before it is too late."
hmmm... it appears that I am referring to a differnt issue than I directly posted this comment on... I dont know how it linked to this blog instead of my own... weird...
To our friends at Lake Henshaw, who we consider as family...Once the Hwy is open give Al and Kim a call and we'll be there side by side helping with Any clean up needed to restore our "home away from home".

I really sorry about your Re-servation, My heart goes out to all the native, and glad your casino was saved.
This post is in response to "Trees for our Children"'s post....
I live in the Westwood neighborhood of Rancho Bernardo, which suffered greatly in the Witch Creek wildfire in San Diego, California.
While I respect your opinions on big business, I wanted to clarify to you that the homes lost in this terrible fire were not all built along the hillside, nor were the occupants all wealthy. Yes, some were lovely homes, but my modest neighborhood alone lost 480 homes.
I am not wealthy, and my home is a small home, which was fortunately spared by the relentless resolve and sleepless efforts of firefighters.
I understand being young and having strong principles, but do be careful about 'blanketing' some of the things you observe to mean that everything falls under the same umbrella. There are many who suffered tremendous loss, and it was not because they asked for it in any way. They had tile roofs, they were in a modest neighborhood, but just happened to be in the path of a raging fire fueled by ferocious winds. The ground temperature was over 300 degrees! I live among the destruction, and can tell you that it will always be a humble reminder to me of my blessings, not the mistakes of those who lost their homes.
hi im from san diego but were fortunate enough that fire happens further than our place... but we had rain ashes in first 3 days, i appreciate those brave fire fighters they did put a lot of effort just to save the houses they do deserve rest to keep up energy. GOOD JOB
Bring everyone home safely. I want them all to visit my blog and trade to make back some moula!
Bravo, bravo!! to the fire fighters. We all saw how dangerous the fire was. And because of your bravery, you saved the reservation. That would have been a huge lost- millions of dollars. May God bless you all.
You have been in the thoughts and prayers of many people. We will continue to pray for your protection, direction and favor (pdf). CCNews.org
There have been news reports over here in the Uk about the fires. Your fire fighters have done an excellent job.
Are those fires "evil", and if so, were they started by Al Queda?
GOD IS GREAT! THANK GOD THAT THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE WHO WOULD PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE LIKE THIS!!
I have heard news that my family is well, and this brings a great calm to my heart. One that I know will allow to me continue the vision I have for myself, and for them.
You have people praying for you guys all over America. God bless you guys.
